Augering, Boring & Pipe Ramming

Auger boring and pipe ramming are the workhorse trenchless methods for shorter crossings where a casing has to be installed on grade beneath a road, railway or watercourse. They are less publicised than directional drilling, but for the right crossing they are faster, cheaper and considerably more accurate on line and grade.

Auger boring advances a steel casing from a launch pit while a rotating auger removes spoil through it, giving the grade control that gravity sewers require. Pipe ramming drives the casing with a percussive hammer instead — an open-face method that handles cobbles, boulders and mixed fill that would stop an auger, and which is often the only viable option under an active rail line where settlement cannot be tolerated.

Choosing correctly between them is most of the value. We select the method on ground conditions, crossing length, grade tolerance and what sits above, rather than on what happens to be in the yard.

Launch & receiving pits: Engineered, shored excavations with the thrust reaction the method requires and full groundwater control.
Auger boring: Cased crossings installed on line and grade, suited to gravity sewers and other tight-tolerance work.
Pipe ramming: Percussive casing installation through cobbles, boulders and mixed fill where augering would refuse.
Casing & carrier installation: Steel casing installed and the carrier pipe positioned on spacers, with end seals and annular grouting.
Rail & highway crossings: Work executed under railway and road-authority agreements, including monitoring and flagging requirements.
Method selection: Ground conditions, length, grade tolerance and the asset overhead determine the method — not equipment availability.
Grade control: Continuous laser and survey monitoring holds line and grade within the tolerance gravity systems depend on.
Settlement monitoring: Surface and track monitoring beneath live rail and roadway, with defined thresholds and a documented response.
Obstruction management: Cobble, boulder and unexpected-obstruction procedures are agreed in advance so a refusal does not become a schedule crisis.
Pit safety: Engineered shoring, controlled access and continuous atmospheric monitoring on every entry.
Grade accuracy: The right choice where a gravity system leaves no room for the tolerance a steered bore accepts.
Difficult ground: Ramming handles cobbles, boulders and fill that stop other trenchless methods outright.
Live infrastructure: Crossings completed beneath operating road and rail without closure, settlement or service interruption.
Cost-effective spans: For shorter crossings these methods routinely beat both open cut and directional drilling on total installed cost.
