Microtunneling

Microtunneling is the method of choice when the installation has to be deep, accurate and below the water table, and when settlement at the surface is simply not acceptable. A remotely operated microtunnel boring machine is jacked forward from a launch shaft while pipe is installed directly behind it, with the excavation face under continuous pressure support for the entire drive.

That face support is the defining characteristic. Because ground is never left unsupported, the method works in running sand, soft silt and full hydrostatic head — conditions that would make augering or open cut impossible — while holding line and grade to the tolerances a gravity sewer demands over hundreds of metres.

It is the most equipment- and engineering-intensive method we operate, and we recommend it where those conditions genuinely apply: deep trunk sewers, crossings beneath rivers and rail corridors, and work under city streets where surface settlement would damage adjacent structures.

Shaft construction: Launch and reception shafts built by secant pile, liner plate or caisson methods with the thrust capacity the drive requires.
Guided MTBM drives: Remotely operated tunnelling with laser or gyroscopic guidance holding line and grade over the full drive length.
Pressurised face support: Slurry or earth-pressure balance support matched to the ground and groundwater conditions encountered.
Jacking pipe installation: Reinforced concrete, polymer concrete and steel jacking pipe installed directly behind the machine.
Separation & spoil handling: Slurry separation plant, spoil management and disposal handled under the project's environmental approvals.
Geotechnical-led design: Machine selection, cutterhead configuration and face pressure are set from the ground investigation, not from precedent.
Continuous face support: Ground is never left unsupported, which is what keeps surface settlement within specification.
Real-time guidance: Position is monitored continuously against design and corrected progressively rather than in large steps.
Jacking force management: Thrust is monitored against pipe capacity, with intermediate jacking stations and lubrication on longer drives.
Settlement monitoring: Instrumented surface and structure monitoring with defined trigger levels and pre-agreed responses.
Grade-critical work: Delivers the line and grade accuracy deep gravity sewers require over long drives.
Below the water table: Pressurised face support makes running sand and full hydrostatic head workable ground.
Settlement control: The right method beneath structures, rail corridors and city streets where movement cannot be tolerated.
Long drives: Intermediate jacking stations and lubrication systems extend drive lengths well beyond conventional jacking limits.
